FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to what owners ask most when comparing business finance.
Using the site
Is it free to compare on this site?
Yes. Every loan type page, guide and tool is free, and you don't need to enter any details to use them. You only give us details if you choose to enquire.
Do the tools store my answers?
No. The comparison tool and the loan offer comparer run in your browser. Your answers aren't sent to us or anyone else.
Why don't you publish interest rates?
Business loan pricing depends on the business, the security, the term and the lender's view of risk. A published figure would be wrong for most readers. We explain what drives cost and show you how to compare offers in total dollars instead.
Are the examples on the site real offers?
No. Examples are illustrative and use made-up numbers to show how a structure works. Your own options will depend on your business.
Choosing between loan types
What's the main difference between unsecured and secured business loans?
Security. Unsecured loans rely on the business's trading and usually a director's guarantee, and suit smaller amounts. Secured loans are backed by property or an asset, which can mean larger amounts and longer terms, with more paperwork.
Should I use a line of credit or a term loan?
A term loan suits a one-off cost with a clear payback. A line of credit suits uneven, recurring needs where you draw and repay as cash moves. Many businesses end up with one of each.
When does invoice finance make sense?
When the business is waiting on unpaid invoices from other businesses. It advances part of the invoice value, so the limit grows with sales rather than with your property or balance sheet.
Is equipment finance always the best way to buy equipment?
Not always. Finance secured on the equipment is often efficient for new items from dealers, but older, specialised or privately bought items may suit an unsecured or property-backed loan better.
What can I do if the business has an ATO debt?
There are several options: an ATO payment plan, a business loan to clear the debt, or a property-backed loan for larger amounts. Compare the total cost and the effect on cash flow of each before you choose.
Amounts, cost and offers
How much can a business borrow?
Unsecured and cash-flow options for trading businesses typically run from $5,000 to $500,000, sized on turnover and bank statements. Property-backed business loans run from $20,000 to $5,000,000 against residential or commercial property.
What's the best way to compare two loan offers?
Add up everything you'll pay, including fees and any balloon, over the time you'll actually keep the loan. Compare that dollar figure, then check repayment frequency, early payout terms and guarantees.
Does a lower repayment mean a cheaper loan?
Not necessarily. A lower repayment often means a longer term, which can cost more in total. The loan offer comparer shows both the total cost and the monthly equivalent so you can see the trade-off.
Enquiring and applying
Does enquiring affect my credit score?
No. There's no credit check when you first enquire. A credit check is only discussed once you decide to go ahead with a specific option.
Will my details be sent to lots of lenders?
No. One person works on your enquiry and matches it to options that fit. Your details aren't sprayed across a list of lenders.
What documents will I need?
Usually recent business bank statements, ID for the owners, your ABN and details of what the money is for. Property-backed loans also need property details. We tell you exactly what's needed once you decide to proceed.
Can a business with bad credit or no financials borrow?
Often. Past credit issues are considered case by case, and low doc options use bank statements, BAS or an accountant's letter instead of full financials. Be upfront on the form and we'll tell you honestly what's realistic.
Why does filling in the form accurately matter?
Because it decides which option is suggested first. Accurate turnover, debts and property details mean the first answer is one that can be approved, not the start of a second round of calls.
